The most common reason people are underpaid for platinum is that it was bought as white gold. The two look nearly identical once polished, and plenty of counters will not stop to check. Platinum is denser — the same ring weighs noticeably more — and it is usually stamped PT, PLAT, 950 or 900. We test it in front of you rather than guessing from appearance.
It also behaves differently in the market. Platinum and gold prices move independently, and there are stretches where platinum trades below gold despite being rarer. We price against the day's platinum market and show you where that is.
Selling a platinum ring or setting
Most platinum reaching us is an engagement ring or a wedding band, often with a diamond still in it. Those are two separate values and we treat them separately: the metal by weight and purity, the stone on its own merits. You are welcome to keep the stone and sell only the setting, and if the ring means something to someone in the family we will say so rather than talk you out of it.
Old settings that are worn thin, bent, or missing stones are still worth selling — platinum does not degrade, and a setting past repair is still the same metal it always was.
Do you buy platinum jewelry?

How do I know if my ring is platinum or white gold?
Look inside the band for PT, PLAT, 950 or 900; white gold is usually marked 14k or 18k. If there is no mark, or you'd rather be sure, we'll test it with you at no charge.
Can I sell the setting and keep the diamond?
Of course. We price the metal and the stone separately, so you can sell either, both, or neither once you know what each is worth.
Is worn or broken platinum still worth something?
Yes. Platinum does not lose purity with wear, so a bent, thin or stone-less setting is worth its weight regardless of how it looks.
