How Much Is Too Much to Spend on an Engagement Ring?

I’ve been in the jewelry business all my life. I mean that literally. I’m a third generation jeweler so even before I was an adult, I worked in my grandfather’s and father’s jewelry stores. I guess there were a few years when I thought I might do something different with my life but really, for as long as I can remember, I’ve thought of myself as a jeweler. Let’s just say at least three and a half decades.

Thirty-five years.

Can I tell you something? That’s a whole lot of engagement rings.

I’ve lost count of how many engagement rings I’ve sold. I’ve had the great privilege of being involved in this sweet, small way in a great many relationships. I’m always excited to have the chance to play this role, and I’m grateful that this is my life.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned is that more than any other purchase, people are inclined to overspend when it comes to engagement rings. Why is that? Well, it’s really quite simple. Love. Just how parents often overspend on Christmas and birthdays for no other reason than because they love their children, people often overspend on engagement rings.

Just like spending beyond your means at Christmastime can leave you with mounting financial stress (that your children can sense) and impact on your home life, overspending on an engagement ring can impact your relationship. In fact, experts say financial stress is one of the biggest indications a marriage is in trouble.

From the outset, I’ve advised couples to spend wisely when it comes to buying an engagement ring. Spending beyond your means is a horrible idea. If you must borrow money to buy the engagement ring, you are probably spending too much. There are times, of course, when using credit for the purchase fits within your budgeting plans but if you go into debt because it’s the only choice when buying the engagement ring, you’re spending too much.

The most important gift you can give the person you love isn’t an over-the-top engagement ring. The most important gift you can give is a marriage that starts off on strong financial footing. If you’re in the market for an engagement ring, give us a call. If you’re looking for an engagement ring in San Diego, drop by our La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
