What Makes Dial Patina Desirable?
A look at how tropical dials, purpled bezels and other quirks of age turn wear into a vintage Rolex's most prized feature.

While some signs of wear such as scratching and bracelet stretch are undesirable characteristics of a vintage Rolex, there are some examples of wear that add value to a luxury watch. Typically, these are referred to under a blanket term, patina. A big appeal of collecting watches that have some years is the knowledge patina makes each watch unique. Based on the elements to which it is exposed and how it is worn, patina may manifest in different ways. My favorite example is dial color. On Rolexes, black dials can morph into a brown shade often referred to as a tropical dial. Blue dials and bezels often obtain a shade of purple. Rather than diminish value, watches with these dials are in considerable demand.
