What Is the Symbolism of An Eternity Engagement Ring?

Engagement rings have a very long history that dates back thousands of years. Rings were given in ancient times as not only a token of commitment but also as a way to prove a potential match had the resources to take care of the bride. Over the centuries, many aspects of rings have gained symbolic importance. Although times have changed, the symbolism can still help you to decide on a ring’s designs and components. This blog post is part of a series on engagement ring symbolism I think you might enjoy.

The tradition of giving rings as a symbol of eternity dates back to ancient Egypt, where rings were given as a token of love. The Victorians believed that the circular shape of the ring represented the endlessness of love. Today, a ring with inset stones completely around the band is referred to as an eternity ring because of how the gems highlight the circle with no beginning or end.

An eternity ring symbolizes eternal love and commitment and is often given to mark a significant milestone or to represent a promise of lifelong devotion. It is most often, therefore, used as either the wedding band or as an anniversary gift. However, it is becoming more common to use an eternity ring as an engagement ring. This is most often done by a band with only the inset stones but some people also enjoy an eternity ring with a shoulder designed into it to add a raised center stone.

The unbroken loop of precious metal and gemstones represents a love that has no beginning or end. You already know that. The stones and metal, though, inform the symbolism. Do you want eternal passion? Put rubies in the band. Do you want eternal loyalty and fidelity? Make the metal yellow gold. Use rose gold for eternal sweetness.

How you arrange the stones can impact the meaning, too. If you use all the same kind of gem, the uniformity of the gemstones along the band represents a harmonious relationship. If you alternate gems, you show a rich, diverse, and engaged relationship. If you intersperse the gemstones with emeralds, you’re symbolizing the life cycle and the repeated new beginnings you will share together.

As you can see, there’s an opportunity for a lot of meaning with an eternity engagement ring. If you’re looking for an engagement ring in San Diego, I would love to help. Give me a call or drop by the La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
