An overview of the work of Constantino Aucca Chutas, a new Rolex Laureate.

Rolex does more than make incredible watches. The Rolex Awards for Enterprise is a program that recognizes individuals and their innovative projects that benefit the planet and humanity. The awards recognize individuals who have the courage to take on major challenges and advance human knowledge and well-being. The five most recently awarded individuals are very impressive and today I’d like to talk about one of them.
One of the things I find most inspiring is when it seems like there’s no way at all to make a difference but then someone does something remarkable. Such a person is Constantino Aucca Chutas. “Tino” is a biologist with Inca heritage. When he learned the Andeas were threatened, he felt compelled to do something about it. His activities to secure water supplies and to restore the forests and ecosystems of the Andes earned him an Award for Enterprise from Rolex in 2023.
The Andes in South America. A beautiful mountain range and a very vibrant and biodiverse ecosystem. However, this incredible area is threatened with forest destruction, loss of habitat, and more. Mining, lumber, and other industries have taken a toll. In an effort to “run faster than the destruction” and get ahead, Constantino has had a dramatic impact on the region.
How about three million trees? Accion Andina, the organization Chutas founded has done just that. Involving more than twenty-five thousand indigenous families, this man has made it a true united front.
And he wants to plant millions more. His plan is to plant millions of trees in the Andes. Because the forests of the Andes have a great deal of sponge-like vegetation (such as moss), they are very good for storing water. That makes the forest critical for maintaining water supplies for local communities. His work not only increases the water level for streams, lakes and other bodies of water but it also encourages close ties between the people and their environment.
