Is It Okay to Get Married on a Holiday?

Well, when we talk about it being okay, you have to think about what that means. If you’re talking about eloping all by yourselves, that’s one thing to think about. If you’re talking about a dream wedding that happens to coincide with July 4th, you’re going to think about different things. A wedding at a lovely mountain lodge at Christmas might be as beautiful as it can be but is it a good idea? In general, deciding whether to get married on a holiday depends on a number of things. While some find it festive and convenient, others may encounter some problems. Higher costs, guests who can’t make it, and a lifetime of your anniversary being overshadowed is all part of the decision.

If you’re married on a holiday, you can have a special, festive atmosphere. Holidays offer a built-in theme and can add a special touch to your wedding. There’s something to be said about that. A wedding on Thanksgiving can display gratitude you feel for each other. A Christmas wedding suggests you are each other’s gift. An Easter wedding can suggest a beautiful new beginning. If you get married on Halloween, you’re commemorating your personalities and likes. It can be a very special time for you, sure. You may also get lower costs for venues and other expenses because the holidays (except for those that happen in the summer) represent the off season for wedding businesses.

However, there are some important things that need to be considered. First of all, it will cost more for your guests to travel or to get hotel rooms. During peak holiday seasons, hotels may be booked up. Many guests may have existing plans or commitments.  Some guests may not be able to attend. Some may simply resent you scheduling in a way that takes them away from a holiday important to them. It’s a reasonable thing for them to feel but oftentimes we’re wrapped up in our own excitement when we’re getting married.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to get married on a holiday is a personal one, so weigh the pros and cons carefully. Make your decision and enjoy your special day!
