An engagement ring can be a substantial investment so it’s not surprising that some people feel that maybe there is too much emphasis put on this decorative symbol. After all, wouldn’t it make more sense to spend money on other things, things that give more security to the marriage?
Can’t two people be in love without an engagement ring? Does someone have to be rich in order to be in love? If someone were to suggest you had to buy a car for your partner in order to prove your love, you’d dismiss that right away, wouldn’t you? Well, why don’t we dismiss the engagement ring purchase? Is there something to it?
First and foremost, engagement rings are symbolic. Are they necessary? No. Are they important? Yes. The symbolism of an engagement ring as tangible proof of love is as old as civilization, although the items and designs have changed. Originally, engagement jewelry was intended to convince a bride’s family that the suitor could actually take care of a wife. It was designed to show that the bride would be secure and safe.
Although times have changed and partners don’t necessarily bear responsibility for the physical well-being of their spouses, the symbolism of two lives becoming intertwined and both parties becoming intertwined in the lives of the other is still powerful. Does this mean you need to spend more on a ring than a down payment on a house? We don’t believe so. We don’t believe that at all.

That means we don’t hold to arbitrary standards like a three-month salary guideline or any other formula that tells you how much you should spend. We believe it’s better to get a modest ring now and upgrade to a nicer ring later than to spend more than you should.
