If you're about to pop the question, congratulations! You must be very excited and, of course, eager to see the ring right where it belongs…on your partner’s finger! This is a joyous time but it can also be stressful. After all, there is a great deal of importance put in the engagement ring, isn’t there? It seems like the expectations put on people are really enormous.
What’s the right kind of diamond?
What’s the perfect design?
How big should the diamond be?
What kind of precious metal?
And here’s the biggest one of all… How in the world are you going to afford this?
First and foremost, remember than an engagement ring is a symbol of your commitment to each other. It’s a picture of your relationship. If you wanted a picture of your house, would you spend so much money on the picture that you can’t afford the mortgage? Unfortunately, a great many people start out their marriages on poor financial footing because of the costs of the wedding and wedding jewelry.
One way to know immediately if you’re paying too much for an engagement ring is pretty simple. If you go into debt for it and spend beyond your means, you’re paying too much. Your purchase should be based on your personal budget as it is, not as it will have to be after you take on additional debt. Don’t be swayed by slogans. The three-month guideline was invented by a diamond industry group, not by you and not by your partner. Don’t let your love for your partner drive you to make a bad decision. Remember that your partner will be impacted if you’re still trying to pay the ring off three years from now.
At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we believe people should never start out their marriage on poor financial footing for the sake of wedding jewelry.
