14k Gold

14k gold chain

The most common gold purity for engagement rings and wedding bands is 14 karat(14K.) This is because 14K gold offers a good balance between gold content, durability, and affordability. 14k gold is 58.3% gold. The other 41.7% is made of other metals such as zinc, platinum, silver, nickel, or copper. The percentages create an alloy that consists of a balance between durability and appearance that has proven to be very popular with people buying jewelry.

14K is a good choice for both engagement rings and wedding bands because of that balance and also because of its affordability compared to 24k gold (pure gold) and 18k gold (75% pure.) 10k gold is flipped in reverse with 14k. What I mean is that it’s 58.3 percent other metals and 41.7% gold. 14k has more gold content than 10k, and that means you’ll get a richer and more vibrant color. It’s not as durable as 10k and will cost more but most people choose 14k as a better balance of appearance, cost, and durability.

14k gold is a particularly good choice when you’re looking for white gold or rose gold. Rose gold is an alloy of gold and copper. The rose (pink color) comes from the copper. The intensity of the pink color varies depending on how much copper is in the alloy, and the mix with a 58.3% gold alloy seems to create what people find most attractive.

The same appears to be true with white gold. White gold is an alloy of pure gold and white metals like nickel, palladium, or silver. The other metals give white gold its silvery-white appearance. Rhodium plating is often added to create a bright, reflective finish and to increase the metal's durability. Once again, 14k is the most attractive to most people.
