Things to Keep in Mind when You Sell Your Engagement Ring

Bert Levi Family Jewelers buys a great many engagement rings. We buy thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry and fine timepieces every week. You might be surprised how many items are engagement rings. There are many reasons people sell engagement rings. Not all of them are sad, actually.

A great many customers sell their engagement ring to me so that they can upgrade to a more expensive ring. We think that’s a smart thing to do, to buy carefully when you’re just starting out and then to upgrade when you’re in a better financial setting. Sometimes, people inherit the rings or buy them in large estate sales.

Whatever reason you may have for selling an engagement ring, there are some things you’ll rant to keep in mind in order to make the process go smoothly for you as well as to ensure you get the best deal you can.

First and foremost, you need to know what you have. If you’ve recently had the ring appraised, that’s great news. If not, go get a verbal appraisal from a jeweler. A verbal appraisal will be inexpensive (we do them for free) and I can guarantee you they can be critical to getting what you need. Too many people simply sell to a gold buyer and lose out, completely unaware of the money they’re leaving on the table. Before you do anything else, figure out the value of what you have.

After you’ve got an idea of the value of your engagement ring, you’ll want to think about the best place to take it. You want an engagement ring buyer who not only wants to give you a fair deal but also has the means to make it happen. Pawn shops are great for many things but if you want to sell your item outright instead of getting a loan, you should pass. Buying and selling is a secondary aspect of their business, and you want someone handling your ring whose main business is jewelry.

I highly recommend you sell your engagement ring to a jeweler. Of course, I would love to be the one to buy it but even if you don’t choose my store, you still should choose a jeweler. Jewelers have customers who may buy the ring. That means the plan won’t be to just melt the ring down for gold. That means you’re likely to get a better price.
