Marketing and Pricing Your Jewelry Yourself

If you want to sell jewelry, you can bring it to a pawn shop or to a jeweler like me. We’ll be glad to buy it, and it’s an important enough service in a pinch that we were treated by the state as an essential business to help people with their cash flow needs during the pandemic lockdowns. If you need cash, you can sell very quickly to a pawn shop or to a jeweler. You’ll get more, in general, from a jeweler but a pawn shop is a great option is your jewelry is primarily valuable because of the materials and not the design.

But either way, you’re not getting the retail value of your items.  This is why a lot of sellers opt to try to sell the items themselves, usually by posting in classifieds like Craigslist or online marketplaces like Ebay or Etsy. Here are some tips if you go that route:

Presentation and marketing can be very important. That’s why you should make sure that you have high-quality images. Showcase your jewelry with clear, well-lit photos. Show it from multiple angles. When it’s important, highlight details like hallmarks, gemstones, and craftsmanship. This goes hand in hand with detailed descriptions. You need to provide accurate and informative descriptions. They should include the piece's history, materials, condition, and any unique features. You can use social media, email lists, and online advertising to reach potential buyers if you like but if you write the descriptions and the titles well, the classified or marketplace search engine will do a good job for you.

Let’s say you’ve got the marketing figured out. The next thing you need to do is think about pricing. Set a price based on market research and expert appraisals. You can get a free verbal appraisal from Bert Levi Family Jewelers. A number of places will offer you an estimate of value. Here, your price is based on an accurate picture of the item’s worth. Be prepared to negotiate with potential buyers but avoid drastically lowering the price below estimate of the value. If you need the money fast, sell it to a jeweler or pawn shop. If you sell it yourself, hold out for a fair price.

If you’d like that verbal appraisal, give me a call or drop by the store. We’ll be glad to help.
