Choosing Women’s Watches

Women's Chopard watch.

I don’t want to wade into any controversy here so let me start off saying that the world of horology is really a man’s world. I’m not saying that’s how it should be but unfortunately, that’s how it is. If you want a fine timepiece, you’re going to get more interesting mechanical designs and complications with men’s watches. Is that by design? Well, it’s hard to tell. In general, though, women’s watches are treated primarily as jewelry and not for function.

This blog post is designed to help you choose a watch based on more than just how pretty it is. I believe when choosing a fine timepiece, a woman should look for a watch that is well-crafted with high-quality materials, a design that suits her personal style, and a comfortable fit on her wrist. The features should align with her needs, and that includes aesthetic as well as functional needs.

Here are my thoughts.

Consider the size and shape carefully. Most men’s luxury watches appear oversized compared to standard watches. For a woman, you should think about your own fashion sense.  The watch should be proportionally sized to the wearer's wrist. Most women’s watches are designed as dress watches rather than tool watches. If you enjoy a diving watch, wear one! You can choose watches with smaller cases and dial diameters if you like. Look for established luxury watch brands known for their quality and craftsmanship.

Consider the Materials. High-quality materials like stainless steel, gold, or platinum offer durability and elegance. Unfortunately, most women’s watches come in gold or two-tone. It may seem like you can’t get a stainless steel watch but you can. The manufacturers tend to market dress watches but you aren’t limited to that. Consider the type of band, whether a metal bracelet for a more formal look or a leather strap for versatility. Choose a dial design that complements your style, with options like Roman numerals, clean markers, or intricate embellishments.

Consider the Purpose. Does the watch meet your daily needs or is it just for dress-up. Does it have a function like water resistance for swimming? Is it versatile so it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion? Choose a design that reflects your personality, whether it's classic, modern, or bold. You’re entitled to the perfect watch for you, and the perfect watch for you ought to be enjoyed.

If you’re looking for a luxury watch such as a pre-owned Rolex in San Diego, I hope you’ll give me a call. Or, you can drop by my La Jolla showroom. I can promise you that if you reach out, you’ll be glad you did.
