I don’t believe there has ever actually been a study about the subject but it seems to me that nearly everybody who sells gold in San Diego (or for that matter, anywhere) ends up taking the first deal at the first place they check. Or they’re unhappy with an offer and put their gold back in the jewelry box and forget about it for a while.
I think the same thing happens when they sell diamonds, fine luxury watches, or anything else. When people come to me to sell jewelry in San Diego, nearly all of them haven’t been anywhere else and don’t intend to be. They’re always amazed when I suggest they get another opinion. Of course, a Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we want a relationship with a customer that lasts for far longer than one sale.
But that’s not the point I want to make right now. If you have some jewelry, you probably only know what you paid for it. If that happened some time ago, the value has changed. Precious metal value changes regularly, and though it doesn’t happen with the same volatility, diamond value changes as well. What this means is that the underlying material value of your jewelry changes. In addition, the stylistic value of your jewelry changes. There are some styles that gain a resurgence and become very much in demand. In some cases, the style impact is the exact opposite.
The point is that the price you paid for an item of jewelry might have nothing at all to do with its current value. You may also have inherited the jewelry or acquired it in another way altogether. I’ve bought thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry obtained at storage unit auctions.
I’ve also bought jewelry that was part of the inventory of a retail business that was shutting down. There are many reasons people acquire jewelry and many reasons to sell.
And you need someone to help you understand the value. The best way to do that is with an appraisal, either verbal or formal. A verbal appraisal is just what it sounds like. At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, one of our GIA Accredited Jewelry Professionals will examine your items and render an opinion on the value. We’ll also usually make an offer for purchase that you can accept or reject as you see fit.
A formal appraisal is more involved and will take longer. These appraisals are often required when the jewelry is part of an estate or a large purchase or if you need to provide value for insurance purposes. In either case, Bert Levi Family Jewelers will complete your appraisal with care and attention to detail.
If you’re in need of a jewelry appraisal or if you want to sell jewelry in San Diego, drop by our La Jolla showroom. You’ll be very glad that you did.
