What to Do if You Need to Sell Jewelry

There are many reasons people find themselves needing to sell jewelry. An inheritance might leave them with gold to sell. Perhaps a change in career means they need to sell a Rolex watch or another luxury timepiece. Diamonds, engagement rings, necklaces, watches, precious metals, gems—people sell jewelry of many different types and with many different values. If you need to sell jewelry, regardless of your reasons, there’s one thing you know for certain. You want a fair deal.

Unfortunately, there are a great many places out there that won’t give you a fair deal. So, here are two things to do.

Try to Sell to a Private Party

In almost every case, you’ll get more money when you sell to a private party. Businesses have to pay you less because they need to cover their expenses. It takes longer to sell privately but if you’re not in a hurry, it’s usually the best plan. You can post your items on classified ads websites and social media. You can also just let people know that you see every day. You’d be surprised what happens. Please be careful when you sell online and make sure you only meet people in public places and never send your jewelry before you receive payment.

Pick a Jeweler Over Other Businesses

Avoid the gold-buying operations that have sprung up everywhere. They pay you a fraction of what your jewelry is worth. Pawn shops are a good alternative but most pawn brokers make the majority of their money from making loans, not on straight purchase for resale. In most cases, pawn shops will purchase based on the gold value. Your best bet is going to a jeweler who can purchase your precious metals but also your gems and, best of all, may take your jewelry intending to sell it as it is. That means more money for you. In addition, even if you don’t arrive at a deal with a jeweler, you’re sure to have a much better understanding of the value of your jewelry.
