Engagement rings symbolize something important. How do I know that? I’m a third-generation jeweler, and that gives me an interesting perspective on life, I think. I imagine a third-generation car dealership owner would look at life in the context of the automobile industry. I guess a third-generation chef would interpret life through food and fine dining. I’m a jeweler, and I think it’s fair to say that I look at life through jewelry-colored glasses, so to speak.
One thing about the jewelry industry, though, is that jewelry has always been very symbolic, filled with meaning in many ways. Items declared someone part of a particular clan or family. Items were pledges of honor. Items identified people the way a uniform might now. Jewelry was worn by all classes of life even if some jewelry involved woven grass and pebbles.
But there was always meaning.
And there still is now.
Why do we still have engagement rings? Why is this particular tradition (something that crosses cultures, by the way) still evident and important today?
Think of it this way. Finding your true love is pretty important. It might be the biggest goal for anyone. Sure, it isn’t true for every person but culturally, it’s a very powerful and very important driving force for most people. Well, Engagement rings symbolize a couple's love for each other, commitment to each other, and future with each together.
Engagement rings have been a tradition for centuries, and their significance goes beyond their value as jewelry. The tradition is believed to have been popularized by European nobility in the 1400s. However, there were engagement rings made of grass in Ancient Egyptian times. The meaning of engagement rings can vary by culture, and couples can incorporate their own traditions or create new ones. The unique designs of engagement rings can also contain hidden meanings that reflect the wearer's personality and the couple's relationship.
But they all symbolize love and devotion to a partner. They all symbolize a commitment to a partner and a promise of marriage. It’s really that simple. Is it necessary? Can two people be in love and get married without an engagement ring? Of course they can. Don’t dismiss it as unimportant because it’s not a strictly necessary thing. It’s a symbol of love and not the love. But symbols are important to people, and what’s important to people is important to me.
