The Symbolism of a Diamond on an Engagement Ring

Engagement rings have a very long history that dates back thousands of years. Rings were given in ancient times as not only a token of commitment but also as a way to prove a potential match had the resources to take care of the bride. Over the centuries, many aspects of rings have gained symbolic importance. Although times have changed, the symbolism can still help you to decide on a ring’s designs and components. I am creating a much more detailed series on engagement ring symbolism I think you might enjoy. For now, I hope this is helpful.

Ever since Charles Tiffany developed what has come to be known as the Tiffany setting, diamonds have been the most popular gems for engagement rings. If you think of a diamond ring, it’s likely that the image in your head is one of a diamond set as Tiffany designed it. The solitaire setting lifted the diamond up so it caught the sun in a perfect way. So now, diamonds are the most popular gemstone in an engagement ring, leaving all other gems far behind.

Diamonds symbolize a variety of qualities that are important for marriage. Strength. Endurance. Permanence. They are the most durable naturally occurring substance on Earth, so they symbolize a relationship that is strong, a relationship that can endure whatever happens in this life, a relationship that will last forever. A diamond today will very likely look exactly the same in three hundred years. Is it any wonder that diamonds represent an unbreakable commitment? Is it any wonder that they represent forever love?

In addition to that symbolism, diamonds have throughout history been associated with divinity, strength, and protective powers. They have represented purity and innocence. The shape of the diamond can also symbolize something. It’s obvious what a heart-shaped diamond symbolizes buy there’s more. A princess cut diamond can represent elegance and sophistication. A cushion cut diamond can symbolize resilience and clarity.
