How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Graded?

Ring with Lab Grown Diamond in San Diego

You’ve probably heard of the 4 C’s. Cut, color, clarity, and carat weight are the four graded characteristics of diamonds. Whether the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades the diamond (which is really the most reliable of all grading organizations) or groups such as the International Gemological Institute, the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) or others; they grade the Four C’s.

Lab grown diamonds are certified in the exact same way. Gemologists examine the cut, color, clarity, and carat weight of a gemstone and provide a report, a certification.

The analysis of the cut will determine how closely the gemstone matches the standard for a “perfectly” cut and faceted diamond. The analysis of the color will determine how close to absolutely transparent the stone is. The analysis of clarity will determine if the diamond has any flaws either visible or invisible to the naked eye. And the carat weight is simply the weight of the diamond.

Natural diamonds or lab grown diamonds are graded in the exact same way.

Why?

Because laboratory diamonds are diamonds! It’s that simple. Not only are they the exact same gem but they are sustainably sourced with no ethical issues involved. A diamond grown in the laboratory is a diamond you can trust from a moral standpoint. No mine impacts the environment. No local workers have been mistreated. There are no lab grown conflict diamonds.

Lab diamonds are graded according to the Four C’s like all other diamonds. They just provide a better bang for your buck.
