Do Engagement Rings Still Matter?

Diamond engagement ring in white gold on off-white background.

What’s the big deal about an engagement ring? Do we really need gold and a diamond to prove there’s love? Sure, it used to be important to prove to the bride’s family that the potential husband could provide to her. The ring was part of that price. Also, giving her a ring was intended to impress her. It all stems from ancient ideas about the ring being an almost magical connection. But that was back then. People marry for love now and the conditions are different.

In the last thousand years, a whole lot has changed!

However, we still wear engagement rings and wedding bands on the same finger that people in ancient times believed had a direct connection to the heart. Even though it might not be mystical, if you see a ring on the ring finger, you know there’s love and commitment there. Even if today’s marriages don ‘t just boil down to a man’s ability to support his wife or, for that matter, to just men marrying women, there are still some important things about the ring.

People still love their partners.

People still want a love that will last forever.

People fall in love with the things that make the other person unique.

People all want commitment, and that’s what a marriage takes.

Some people want a life of new adventures.

Some people want a life of romance and sweetness.

Some people want a partner to help them change the world.

Did you know there are gems and metals and designs that specifically symbolize those qualities? There are ways to put together gold and gems so that an engagement ring not only symbolizes the commitment between two lovers but also symbolizes a life of constant new beginnings or a live of unselfish care for others or even a life protecting the planet! The world has changed but that doesn’t mean we need to set aside every tradition. Some still make a lot of sense.
