Colored Diamonds Are Trending for Engagement Rings. Here’s Why.

Yellow diamond engagement ring in San Diego jeweler's inventory

Only a few years ago, the idea of a colored diamond on an engagement ring was almost ludicrous. There weren’t very many available. Not only are colored diamonds very rare in nature but very few are high quality enough for use in jewelry. This changed recently, though, with the increasingly advanced technology of laboratories creating lab grown gems. Let’s look at what I think are the two most important reasons colored diamonds are so popular.

Sudden Availability

It used to be almost impossible to get a colored diamond. Only about one in every 10,000 diamonds has natural color. Among those, deep and consistent coloration is even rarer. Plus, even if you found a lovely colored diamond in nature, the likelihood it would have a carat weight large enough to feature in jewelry was very low. Now, with lab grown diamonds, these rare treasures are available.

The way the market has reacted to the new availability of colored diamonds suggests that there has always been significant demand for them. They just weren’t available. Now, with lab grown diamonds not only increasing their availability but also ensuring they’re absolutely ethical products, people are able to get what they’ve wanted for some time.

Beauty

Colored diamonds come in a wide range of hues and can add unique sparkle to an engagement ring. They can make a ring a personal expression of the relationship with deep colors adding symbolism from cool blue symbolizing peace and shelter from the storm to deep yellow symbolizing loyalty and fidelity. Colored diamonds can be a way to express individuality as well as the joint personality of the relationship.

I’ve been a jeweler for my entire life. Even as a child, I was pretty much a jeweler. That’s what happens when you’re third generation. For all my life, I’ve believed that jewelry is important because of the people involved. Colored diamonds are a lovely way to make an engagement more specifically tailored to the people whose relationship it commemorates. That means something to me.

If you’re looking for an engagement ring in San Diego, I hope you’ll reach out and give us an opportunity to help you. You can also just drop by the showroom in La Jolla. I can tell you that I’m really confident about something. If you get in touch, you’ll be glad you did.
