Why You Want a GIA Accredited Jewelry Professional when You Sell Your Jewelry

Round brilliant cut diamond held in tweezers on black background.

You’ve heard of GIA Certified Diamonds. Did you know the organization involved, the Gemological Institute of America, also has professional education and accreditation? A GIA Accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP) displays comprehensive knowledge about diamonds, colored stones, and jewelry during the accreditation process. This enables them to accurately assess quality and identify different types of stones including treated stones, synthetic stones, and imitation stones. They can explain the 4 C’s in clear detail and can show how they impact value, too. This knowledge allows them to guide customers in making informed purchasing decisions and provide expert advice on jewelry care and design.

But it’s also great for you is you’re selling jewelry.  GIA AJP graduates understand how the 4C’s (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) impact a diamond's value and can explain these concepts to you more effectively than you might imagine. They are skilled at identifying different types of diamonds, including natural, lab-grown, and treated stones, and can explain the differences between them. They understand the GIA diamond grading system and can accurately assess the quality of a diamond based on the 4C’s. They know how fluorescence affects a diamond's body color and can advise customers on its impact on value. Best of all, they can tell you if certification of your diamond will increase its value enough to make it mandatory for you. That’s a way to get more money when you sell.

The skills aren’t limited to diamonds. GIA AJP graduates can identify colored gemstones and help you understand their unique properties and origins. They are knowledgeable about different gemstone treatments and can disclose them to customers during purchases and explain their impact on value during sales. They understand different jewelry design styles as well as various setting styles and their suitability for different gemstones. This, too, impacts value, and this, too, is a reason an ACP is the best professional to look at items you want to sell.

A GIA AJP is a well-rounded professional who can help customers make informed decisions when it comes to the value of jewelry they’re selling.
